I am pretty upset I missed this outrageously cool, très chic picnic! I had the perfect outfit for it … I have some good excuses though!
The unusually refined flash mob slash classy all-white invasion of decked out individuals, by its name Dîner en Blanc, is only at its second NYC edition. Excuse no 1. Monday evening, roughly 3,200 people (why is everyone dressed in white?) showed up unannounced at New York City’s Lincoln Center, set up tables, and started eating. Apparently, groups of 250 gathered at key points around the city, where Group Leaders escorted them to the secret location, revealed only moments before. Excuse no 2.
Who in the world would guess a mass picnic could take place in the middle of NYC on Monday? Well, that’s New York for you! Excuse no 3.
The pop-up picnic was born in Paris 24 years ago when founder François Pasquier wanted to meet up with his friends for an outdoor meal. He asked everyone to wear white so they could find each other easily; in Paris, the dinner now brings as many as 15,000 people! The members-only event has already created tremendous buzz in the Big Apple, with reportedly over 30,000 New Yorkers on the waiting list in 2011. Excuse no 4.
I am impressed not only by the secrecy of the location, and by the amplitude of the flash mob, but also by the logistics involved; impeccably dressed men and women carrying their own sunset-lit meals, tables and chairs, dinnerware, flowers, and some extravagant accessories to top it all of. No excuses here, I would totally try it!
“All are asked to dress elegantly and entirely in white, bring their own epicurean feasts, white tables and chairs. There are no paper plates or plastic cutlery at these events. Diners pull out candelabras, candles and giant flower arrangements to grace the tabletops and sup off fine china and polished silverware, clinking crystal glasses and goblets.”
Enough with the excuses. Some 22 cities worldwide are scheduled to host a Dîner en Blanc in 2012, so don’t say you weren’t informed!
Here are some glamour all-white ensembles from the romantic outdoor feast, taken by WWD.
And here’s how it all went down:
So, where is that dreaded waiting list?
