Yesterday I had a moment of revelation when I discovered Humans of New York. It already has 200,000 Facebook followers?! And I live in New York and only now I heard of it?! Shame on me. Anyhow, it’s unbelievable. After photographer Brandon Stanton left his trading job in Chicago, he decided to move to New York and photograph people: thousands of people, daily, for a couple of years. That sounds like determination to me! Well, he stuck it out and his blog is now hugely popular. Last night alone, I spent like two hours looking through pictures of New York’s people …
I am a New Yorker myself, and I can confirm New York has it all. Artists, financiers, models, socialites, hipsters, more hipsters, successful wannabes, loners, Asians, Indians, Eastern Europeans, Christians, Muslims, Jews, hasidic Jews, free huggers, bohemians, young people, old people, crazy people, determined people, you name it! Everyone has an unique story. People watching is an actual hobby for us New Yorkers
Below are some of my favorites:
“On days when the sunlight bounces off
the neon pink & baby blue of your eyeshadow just so,
you look like a love song, like
a breathing kaleidoscope, like a primrose pressed
between the pages of a classic.”
“May I take your photo? You look beautiful.”
“OK, just make sure you can see the bag.”
“Oh, I didn’t realize you were advertising something.”
“Isn’t everything beautiful advertising something?”
“Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy”
The woman, the dress, the combination of the two …
The old woman and her hat …
The mother …
The poser: “You’re only on Humans of New York once” … make the most of it!
“This is Banana George,” she said, “the world’s oldest barefoot waterskier. He’s 97 now. When he was 92, he set the world record for the oldest person to waterski barefoot.”
Ms. Mellonhead: “Just fixin’ her melon.”
The dashing gentleman …
Happiness: “So what inspires you?” “Colors, flowers, and picnics.”
